SHILLONG, Sep 29: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong unveiled the bust of former Member of Parliament, the late Peter Garnett Marbaniang at the Laitumkhrah police point on his 25th death anniversary on Thursday. The bust was unveiled in the presence of Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh, Director-General of Police LR Bishnoi and the children and family members of the late MP. The CM said the unveiling of the late Marbaniang’s bust is a powerful message to future generations, “reminding us about his contributions and also reminding us about the values he had stood for”.
He said the bust is a reminder of how the former MP had dedicated his life not just to the people of the constituency but to the state and to the entire nation.
“Therefore, we must always remember and keep those values and strive to follow in his footsteps in the days to come,” Sangma said, recalling some moments of the association of his late father Purno A Sangma with the late Marbaniang.
He said he felt good to be working with East Shillong legislator Ampareen Lyngdoh in continuation of the legacy of cooperation in the service of the people of the state.
“We are doing our best to continue with this legacy. We must remember that great people may leave us, but their ideas, vision, and legacy will always remain,” he said.
Tynsong underscored the need to continue to follow in the footsteps of the late Marbaniang for serving the people to the best of one’s capability.
The late Marbaniang was a member of the Meghalaya Assembly from 1972 to 1983 and served as a state minister from 1975 to 1983. He was re-elected to the Assembly in 1988, serving as its speaker.
He also represented the Shillong Lok Sabha constituency from 1989 to 1996.
Among his wards present on the occasion were Ampareen Lyngdoh and West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Herbert G Lyngdoh.
