SHILLONG, Oct 11: An upbeat National People’s Party on Tuesday asserted that as many as 5-6 sitting MLAs, including some from the Trinamool Congress, would soon join the ruling party.
NPP state president WR Kharlukhi, who is currently touring Garo Hills with an aim to strengthen the party, said MLAs from various political parties including TMC would join his party by the first week January ahead of the Assembly elections due in February.
The party president also said that extensive ground work is being done in Garo Hills to strengthen the party.
Asked if sitting MLAs from other parties would be given the party ticket once they formally join camp, Kharlukhi said no decision has been taken on allotment of the party ticket.
The NPP had emerged as the second largest party, behind the Congress, after the 2018 Assembly polls but was able to garner the support of the winning MLAs from the UDP, PDF, HSPDP and BJP to form the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance which took over the reins of the government.
Prior to the 2018 polls, stalwarts like Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar and others deserted the Congress and joined the NPP.
