SHILLONG, Oct 11: St Edmund’s College will kick off its yearlong centenary celebrations on November 5.
The college, established in 1923, will complete 100 years next year.
Sylvanus Lamare, the college principal said the highlight of the celebration will be collaborations with prominent alumni like fashion designer Daniel Syiem, stand-up comedian Abhineet Mishra and members of the Shillong Chamber Choir to name a few.
The activities will also include the staple musical events, family nights, felicitation of former principals, teaching and non-teaching staff and prominent alumni, he told reporters on Tuesday. “The focus of our centenary celebration will be outreach programmes to be carried out by various departments and cells such as UBA, NSS and NCC among the urban and rural communities,” Lamare said.
He urged the alumni to register themselves and check the college website and social media handles for updates and necessary information relating to the activities of the college.
Lamare said the college has 2,800 students, 110 teaching staff, and 40 non-teaching staff. The institution has 20 undergraduate and one post-graduate department.
“To date, we are the only college in India to get a star status for biotechnology from the government of India,” he said, adding that the college is looking forward to implementing the New Education Policy 2020.
“We want to be meaningful to society in assisting young people to get an education that will make them employable. We know it is not easy but we think it is worth trying to give our best,” Lamare said.
He said the college had assisted young people to discover their potential through different events organised during the college week (normally college month), which got curtailed due to the semester system.
The college’s pupils include two chief election commissioners (JM Lyngdoh and Harishankar Brahma), a chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (David R Syiemlieh) and others in civil services, Lamare said.
The college’s Br Simon Coelho said St Edmund’s has been able to achieve the centenary milestone due to the efforts of everyone including teachers, parents, students and stakeholders.
He said mathematics has been the most sought-after department of the college for the last few years.
