SHIILLONG, Oct 12: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will soon launch a state-wide campaign to root out the issue of drugs in Meghalaya.
Informing this, state BJP president Ernest Mawrie, in a statement, said that the state BJP has already apprised the central leadership of the drug menace in Meghalaya, and a full-fledged mechanism will soon be launched by the BJP to eradicate the same.
It may be mentioned that approximately 40,000 kg of drugs, seized by the Narcotics Control Bureau and other agencies of Northeastern states, were destroyed in the virtual presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Guwahati recently.
Referring to the same, Mawrie said, “This shows how serious the central government is behind the issue of drugs in the North East, which has also become a growing concern in the state of Meghalaya and has affected and destroyed families and lives.”
He also stated that the recent move to demolish an illegal building located within the Shillong Cantonment Board, which was reportedly the den of drugs peddlers, has also been acknowledged by the BJP. “This is just the beginning and BJP Meghalaya, with the support of the Central Government, shall continue to address this menace till it is wiped out from its roots,” a hopeful Mawrie said.

Meanwhile, BJP Meghalaya Pradesh on Wednesday appointed Mariahom Kharkrang and Gregory F Shullai as state spokespersons for the party.
While handing them appointment letters at state party office, Mawrie has wished them in their future endeavours.
