NONGPOH, Oct 13: The 5th edition of the Megha Kayak Fest (MKF) 2022 kicked-off at Umtrew river located at the Whitewater Village, Umtham in Ri Bhoi District on Thursday with several renowned kayakers from across the globe competing in the four-day event.
Organised by the Ri Bhoi Water Sports & Tourism Cooperative Society Limited (RBWSTCS) and supported by the Meghalaya Tourism Department, the MKF features two main challenges including the downriver time-trail where competitors are required to kayak down a 350-meter-long stretch of the river downstream, challenging the whitewater section, and the extreme stalom race in which four competitors race head-to-head through a course of hanging downstream on river rapids, in an elimination race format.
Speaking to media persons, Giovanni De Gennaro from Italy and Sofia Reinoso from Mexico said that this is the first time they are in India and are happy with the event being held in Meghalaya.
In love with the rivers and scenic beauty of the area, Reinoso urged the people of the state to protect and safeguard the rivers. “I would say that take care of your rivers because you guys have a paradise and keep developing the sport and fight for your dreams,” Reinoso said.
