Traditional heads, FKJGP inspect proposed landfill site

NONGPOH, Oct 14: Traditional heads of Hima Mylliem and Raid Marwet along with members of Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) on Friday conducted an inspection of the proposed landfill site identified at Umnowe village under Raid Marwet.
It may be mentioned that till date, the Raid Marwet area, including Byrnihat, does not have a proper site for dumping garbage, which has resulted in people discarding garbage on the roadside and open public spaces.
Speaking to media persons, Basan Nongkseh of Hima Mylliem and Syiem of Raid Marwet Ken Syiem informed that the proposed site at Umnowe village belongs to the Raid Marwet.
Informing that the area is spread over three acres, they said a meeting will soon be held with the village leaders and locals to sensitise them on the need to have a proper landfill site in compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules.
Meanwhile, FKJGP North Khasi Hills vice president Lumlang Mawnai informed that the Federation took up the issue following reports from members that people are disposing of garbage on the roadside and in open public spaces due to the unavailability of a proper landfill site in the area.
Mawnai also expressed gratitude to the traditional heads of Hima Mylliem and Raid Marwet for allotting the land and informed that the FKJGP along with the Hima Mylliem and Raid Marwet will sensitise the locals on the benefits of a landfill site and proper management of solid waste.
