Cabbie jumps into Umiam Lake, search on for body

NONGPOH, Oct 20: Personnel from the Umiam police station, the State Rescue Team (SRT) and the Fire and Emergency Service (F&ES) have launched an operation to retrieve the body of the driver of a passenger vehicle who is said to have allegedly jumped into the Umiam Lake at around 4.30 am on Thursday.
Police said they received information that a passenger vehicle (ML05 Y 7753) was lying abandoned on the Umiam bridge, following which a team rushed to the spot to conduct inquiry. During preliminary inquiry, it was found that the car key was in the vehicle and police also found a mobile phone and the jacket of the driver from the bridge.
Police said the driver, identified as Skhemborlang Kharmawphlang from Mawlai Mawtawar, had jumped into the lake following which a day-long search operation was conducted to retrieve the body but without any success.
The search operation will continue on Friday, police said.
