NONGSTOIN, Oct 20: The National People’s Party (NPP), Nongstoin Block, on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, seeking the latter’s immediate intervention into various issues for the welfare of the people of Nongstoin in particular and the district in general.
Secretary of NPP Nongstoin Block Apsharailang Syiem informed that the chief minister has been asked to expedite the grant of coal mining license.
“Despite the order of the Supreme Court, it is disheartening that the applications submitted by several miners for mining licenses have been pending approval from the state government,” he said.
The chief minister has also been asked to include Nongstoin under the Smart City Project.
Secretary of NPP Nongstoin Block unit said that despite West Khasi Hills being notified as a full-fledged district in 1976, Nongstoin is lacking all-round development when compared to other district headquarters in the state.
He also lamented that despite entering into agreements with private developers by the previous governments, no serious efforts have been made for construction and commission of the Kynshi hydroelectric power project. “People of Nongstoin firmly believe that under your able leadership, the project will be revived and implemented at the earliest,” the NPP said.
It also asked the chief minister to construct a shopping mall by razing an incomplete infrastructure, which was supposed to serve as a supermarket.
With the project never seeing the light of day, the infrastructure remains in a deplorable state.
The NPP also asked the CM to construct a Common Facility Centre equipped with cold storage and food processing.
Sating that the district has immense farming potential, the NPP said that the farmers will benefit greatly if there is a Common Facility Centre.
The chief minister was also asked to improve the sports infrastructure in the district.
“Despite the promising youths, sports infrastructure in the district is in a deplorable state. As of now, there is only one Indoor Sports Hall in the whole district. We have no standard playground for football, cricket or basketball to conduct events at the district level,” the party said.
The CM was also asked to equip Nongstoin Civil Hospital with up-to-date facilities as the hospital caters not only to Nongstoin but the entire district. “Because of overcrowding and lack of facilities, people of this area who are not economically well off do not receive timely care and attention. They are not in a position to afford going to private hospitals to receive medical treatment,” the chief minister was told.
