SHILLONG, Oct 24: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has asked Netflix to apologise and rectify its recent advertisement “Cherrapunji ki Diwali” for wrongly presenting Meghalaya.
KSU president Lambok Marngar said it is wrong on the part of Netflix to wrongly present Meghalaya before the global platform without proper research.
Meanwhile, the union’s general secretary Donald Thabah, in a social media post, condemned the Netflix advertisement saying that “this is absolutely wrong presentation by Netflix India”.
“Netflix is universal, I am a subscriber. As a universal entity, it is very wrong to mislead the universe about my homeland. There is no such place called Cherrapunjee in Khasi land. The name is Sohra. Cherrapunjee is a fictitious name,” Thabah said.
“The Khasis are adherents to Niam Tynrai/Niamtre and Christianity. History about British dominance in fact involves Indo-Aryan oppression on the Khasis. From the Sylhet Light Infantry, the Bengal Native Infantry to the Gorkha Rifles and even to Shan mercenaries. Later on in the 70s, 80s and 90s, every government armed forces suppress us. Is Netflix India following the colonial era?” the KSU leader added.
Thabah maintained that Netflix India should shed the correct light on the tribe, its customs, believes and aspirations.
