SHILLONG, Oct 24: United Democratic Party (UDP) general secretary Jemino Mawthoh on Sunday said the State Election Committee of the party would decide on its candidates for the Assembly elections, due early next year.
He made the statement as Bindo M Lanong and Lambor Malngiang are seeking to contest the polls on the party’s ticket from the Nongkrem seat.
Mawthoh said the party has the utmost respect for Lanong but it has a procedure which needs to be followed for getting a ticket to contest from any constituency.
He said the UDP will take the best decision in the best interest of the party without discriminating against or hurting anyone.
He said the party is receiving applications from the aspirants from different districts and they are under examination.
The State Election Committee, which comprises all leaders of the party, will soon sit and take the final decision on all constituencies, Mawthoh said.
Earlier, Lanong said the UDP is favouring the idea of projecting Malngiang as its candidate from Nongkrem.
He said the party feels Malngiang’s position is better than that of him in the constituency.
