SHILLONG, Oct 25: The Deputy Commissioners of all the 12 districts of Meghalaya sat in forum with the state government via video conferencing to ass the damages caused within the last 24 hours when heavy rainfall and gusty winds due to Cyclone Sitrang wreaked havoc on several parts of the state.
Rainfall began on Monday and continued throughout the day and strong winds went on a rampage destroying power lines and uprooting trees in some parts of the state. Also, power supply was affected in several areas due to the inclement weather.
On Tuesday morning, personnel of the State Response Team rescued a family in Langkyrding area which was flooded. Also, a tree near the IIM Shillong in Nongthymmai was uprooted.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that instructions have been given to fast-track assessment of damages, opt for use of drone survey in certain locations and ensure that relief is extended to the affected.
While the teams are on the job to estimate the damages in the districts, the DCs have been advised to take a proactive approach.
“MeECL is instructed to ensure power is restored and all other departments are advised to work in cooperation and extend assistance wherever necessary,” the CM said.
It may be mentioned that Shillong alone received more than 190 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, while the numbers are much higher in Sohra.
