SHILLONG, Oct 27: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Thursday conducted a preliminary feasibility study of a plot of land at Diengpasoh, measuring 1600 acres, which has been offered by the state government for the construction of a greenfield airport.
The AAI team will continue the study on Friday. The exercise is a long one since the team has to make the obstacle limitation survey and examine other aspects like good frontage and approach roads and easy accessibility from the Guwahati-Shillong Road. The land has to be relatively flat and suitable for construction of an airport.
The state government had floated an expression of interest inviting applications for land measuring a minimum of 800 acres for the greenfield airport. As many as eight applications were submitted by landowners and after initial scrutiny the government zeroed in on the land at Diengpasoh.
Greenfield airport is a term used to identify a new airport, built from scratch in a new location. Such airports are constructed to support the projected requirements of traffic of an existing airport.
