SHILLONG, Oct 29: Governor BD Mishra has maintained that Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is an occasion to revisit India’s freedom movement, and to understand and eliminate the threats to the national integrity and sovereignty.
It may be mentioned that Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) is celebrated on October 31 to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Conveying his Rashtriya Ekta Diwas greetings to the people of Meghalaya, the Governor, in a statement issued here, expressed hope that Rashtriya Ekta Diwas will continue to strengthen the spirit of unity and nationalism among the people.
Recounting Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s unparalleled contribution in unifying India and in safeguarding the rights of the poor and downtrodden, the Governor said that that celebration of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is an occasion to revisit the freedom movement, and to understand and eliminate the threats to the integrity and sovereignty of India.
“The Ekta Diwas is an opportunity to motivate the youth of the nation towards the ideas and ideals that are foundational concepts of our fundamental duties and national solidarity,” the Governor observed.
He also appealed to the people of Meghalaya in particular and the country in general, including the young generation, to develop fraternity, assuring the dignity of individual, and unity and integrity of the nation.
It may be mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced October 31 as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas in remembrance of first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of Independent India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was celebrated for the first time in 2014.
