SHILLONG, Oct 31: Breaking his silence on Friday’s violence and vandalism on the streets of Shillong during the rally organised by the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People to flag the issue of unemployment, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday said the police arrested one person in connection with the incidents.
Stating that three FIRs were lodged, he said a large number of assailants have been identified and necessary actions will be taken against them.
Earlier, the CM chaired a meeting that reviewed the prevailing law and order situation.
On whether there was an intelligence failure to assess the situation, he said one can draw any conclusion.
He said the district administration reposed its faith in the organisers after a discussion with them and granted permission for the rally. There should always be a certain level of responsibility, he felt.
“In this entire incident, very few of the over 1,500 people had resorted to violent activities. Therefore, this (violence) was something that was completely a surprise,” Sangma said.
He said the government has to be more stringent in the future when such a situation arises. He said more steps have to be taken to be prepared to face any situations.
“We have reviewed the situation and instructed the police to take necessary actions as regards this incident as well as future situations. Necessary arrangements and SOPs were discussed in detail,” the CM said.
He said the meeting also discussed various other issues related to law and order but did not disclose the details.
Asked about compensation, he said three persons were injured and the injuries were not of serious nature. He said two to three vehicles, including a Gypsy belonging to the Army, were slightly damaged.
“There was no major damage to any personal vehicles or any assets of the government,” he added.
