Doctors conduct Northeast’s first Alloplastic Jaw Transplant at city hospital

SHILLONG, Nov 3: A team of doctors headed by Dr Bobby Linda Majaw from Shillong and Dr Ashutosh Vatsyayan from Guwahati has conducted Northeast’s first-ever CAD/CAM Alloplastic Bilateral Temporomandibular joint replacement surgery in a private set-up at Supercare Hospital, Shillong.
According to a statement, a 24-year-old female patient from West Khasi Hills, had visited Supercare Hospital with a complaint of difficulty in eating and chewing food, difficulty in opening and closing her mouth, and difficulty in biting her upper and lower teeth for the past one year due to severe pain.
“Her MRI showed bilateral degenerative TM joint disease,” the statement said.
A team of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, who are part of OncomaxNE association, then conducted the aforesaid surgery that lasted for eight hours.
“The patient post surgery had no pain in her TMJ, and was able to open and close her mouth properly,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, it is pertinent to note that the surgery was supported with MHIS government health insurance scheme.
The doctors who successfully carried out the surgery include Dr Debashish Borkotoky, Dr Sangeeta Kar and Dr Janardhan Bordoloi.
