SHILLONG, Nov 8: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) on Tuesday reiterated its demand for a State Employment Policy to ensure 80% job reservation for local youths in private sectors.
The group reaffirmed its demand during their meeting with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma who said he will take up the matter during the next cabinet meeting.
HNYM joint secretary Wyraiwan Sohtun said, “If our ministers and MLAs really think about the youth then they should look into this matter and compulsorily make the private sectors reserve at least 80% of the job for our youth.”
Referring to the State Industrial Policy, Sohtun said according to the policy, 75% jobs should be given to the youth from the open market. The HNYM wants the state government to rectify the same and increase the number to 80% and replace the words “open market” with the words “youth of the state”.
“The private sectors in our state have a lot of potential to employ the youth. Job openings in this sector are by the hundreds but it seems as that this sector is not interested in giving employment to our youth,” he said.
“We have seen that Haryana has recently implemented a job reservation of upto 75% for their local youth. There is 80% reservation in Maharashtra, 75% in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and 70% in Madhya Pradesh,” he said.
