Living Roots Festival on Dec 7 & 8

SHILLONG, Nov 8: The second Living Roots Festival 2022 (Village Tourism Festival)-cum-Quasquicentennial (125 years) celebration of Tyrna Elaka will be held in Tyrna village on December 7 and 8.
The event is being jointly organised by Indian Tourism Shillong, Special Purpose Vehicle Society and Directorate of Tourism.
Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, Living Roots Festival chairman, Donbor Marbaniang, said the festival is being organised to promote tourism in the area.
It is worth mentioning here that the living-root bridge in Tyrna is the second-longest root bridge in the state with a length of around 85 feet.
Informing that the first edition of the festival was held in 2018, he said that they could not organise the second edition of the festival in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic.
As part of the festival, Miss Living Root will also be organised and the participants will be restricted only to residents of Shella Constituency.
The cash prizes of the Miss Living Root include Rs 30,000 for the winner, Rs 15,000 for the first runners up and Rs 10,000 for the second runners up.
Meanwhile, Sordar of Tyrna Elaka, Andreas Wansai, said that they will also be celebrating the 125th year of resettlement from old Tyrna to the present Tyrna village.
According to Wansai, the earthquake of 1897 has caused a major devastation of the old Tyrna village.
