SHILLONG/NONGSTOIN, Oct 9: The state government has carved out Rambrai Community and Rural Development (C&RD) Block from Nongstoin C&RD Block, the inaugural programme for which was held on Wednesday.
According to a statement, the new C&RD Block covers an area of 584.628 square km and comprises 109 villages with a population of 36,148 people.
Rambrai is about 20 kms away from the district headquarter of West Khasi Hills. The major communities in the area are Khasi and Garo.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who inaugurated the new C&RD block in the presence of local MLA Kimfa Sidney Marbaniang and MDC Bajop Pyngrope, expressed hope that the creation of the new block will ensure better governance at the grassroots level.
Assuring that the inauguration of the new C&RD block will upscale developmental activities and ensure delivery of governmental services in an efficient manner, the chief minister said, “C&RD blocks are the most important administrative units when it comes to schemes and programmes. The blocks should be accessible to the people across the state. People of Rambrai had to face difficulties as they had to travel to far-off places for basic services of the government. The inauguration of the block will ensure that the services are brought closer to the people”.
He also informed that the state government is coming up with a revised norm to facilitate applications for different certificates to be availed from the block offices.
“People can apply for various certificates at the block level but applications will be processed at the subdivision level,” he informed.
During the programme, the chief minister also apprised the gathering of the progress of various developmental projects in the district.
Assuring that the work on Nongstoin-Rambrai-Kyrshai road will soon be completed, Conrad said, “Due to poor road connectivity in the area, people had to face a lot of hardship. We are ensuring that this important road link is completed.”
He also announced the upgrade of Rambrai Primary Health Centre (PHC) to Community Health Centre (CHC).
Conrad also informed that a number of LP schools under Rambrai were recently repaired and few more schools will be constructed.
During his visit to Rambrai, the chief minister also handed over financial assistance to the beneficiaries of FOCUS and FOCUS+, YESS Meghalaya, etc, and distributed piglets and kuroiler birds under PROGRESS.
