SHILLONG, Nov 11: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Friday said the regional parties in the state lost their way in power and got eaten up by the party they supported for five years in the government.
“…Once they got power, they lost their way and now, they do not know how to respond to the people of the state,” Opposition Chief Whip George B Lyngdoh told reporters.
Stating that many are deserting regional parties, he said the National People’s Party (NPP) poached the members of even its allies UDP, HSPDP and PDF.
“It is but natural for the regional parties to be miffed at the NPP as it is eating them up despite they had lent their entire support to it. We had warned a year ago that this thing would happen,” Lyngdoh said referring to finger-pointing that started in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA).
Although the MDA has the regional parties as components, yet the NPP, which heads the coalition, has been the target every time charges of irregularities and corruption cropped up against the government.
“Whenever the elected representatives have to go back to the people, there is always an effort to show that they have done something for the people. They try to blame others for the failures. This has been a normal trend for short-term politicians who do not have much commitment to the people during the five-year tenure when they need to show commitment and responsibility,” the TMC leader said.
“Now when they have to go back to people but don’t have answers, they start pointing fingers at each other,” he said.
“We can see that everybody is trying to wash their hands of the problems inflicted upon the people by the government. The coalition partners are pointing all the ten fingers at the NPP,” Lyngdoh said.
He said it is up to people to judge whether they should support such people who skirted their responsibilities despite taking oath in 2018 to abide by the Constitution of India and fulfil commitment towards the people of the state.
