SHILLONG, Nov 12: Seven years after the foundation stone was laid, the Shillong International Centre for Performing Arts & Culture (SICPAC) at Mawkasiang is now set to be inaugurated on Monday.
Interestingly, the base for the project was laid by former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma in 2015, but Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will be inaugurating the project.
The project has been delayed for many years.
However, now being completed, it boasts of a multipurpose theatre which can accommodate 1739 people, and it has a rotating stage.
In addition, the Centre also has a black box theatre with a sitting capacity of 574. The theatre is likely to be used for film screenings and performances.
There is also a smaller theatre, which can accommodate 302 people and would be used for traditional drama and dance.
The SICPAC will also have a tribal museum, VIP lounge and VIP banquet hall. The centre will host local, regional, national and international art and culture activities.
The ‘state-of-the-art’ infrastructure has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 151.33 crore. The original target date of completion was 2018.
