MAWKYRWAT, Nov 18: The Langrin Government Upper Primary School, Wahkaji — the first school in the Wahkaji-Phlangdiloin area under Ranikor C&RD Block, South West Khasi Hills — on Friday got a new school building, constructed at a cost of Rs 52.26 lakh, after 57 long years.
Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein, who inaugurated the school building during a programme here as the chief guest, expressed happiness and exhorted the students to work towards realisation of their goals.
Admitting to various shortcomings in government schools in Mawkyrwat and Ranikor, Marwein said it is one of the reasons why many prefer private schools to government schools, albeit the latter caters to the ones who cannot afford the former.
Informing that there are many families who have stopped sending their children to schools because they cannot afford private schools, he said, “As an MLA, I have worked hard to improve education in our constituency by improving the school buildings.”
Marwein also expressed gratitude to the Education department for providing funds for the upgrade of 11 school buildings in the district through the School Infrastructure Upgradation Project and for sanctioning the repair of 47 school buildings.
The programme was also attended by Sub-Divisional School Education Officer (SDSEO), Mawkyrwat, DG Nongsiej, Sordar Shynong of Wahkaji PF Lyngdoh, teachers and students of the school, locals, et al.
