MAWKYRWAT, Nov 25: Sportspersons and their families from South West Khasi Hills have narrated their predicament in the process of preparations for and participation in big sporting events at both national and international levels.
They were speaking during an interactive session as part of a felicitation programme organised by the South West Khasi Hills unit of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) for the district sportspersons on Friday.
During the interactive session, the sportspersons and their families said that there are hurdles aplenty while preparing for and participating in big sporting events, some of which include lack of facilities to practice, cost of materials, et al.
They lamented that they sometimes have to depend on the support and donation from individuals as well as organisations.
During the programme, SWKH KSU president Forwardman Nongrem maintained that recognition by the government for sportspersons plays a vital role and encourages them to work even harder.
Informing that the KSU had earlier moved the district administration for provision of support in the form of scholarships for the sportspersons from the district, Nongrem assured that the KSU will continue to support the sportspersons from the district.
He also said that the KSU will take up the problems faced by them with the state government.
During the programme, the KSU felicitated sportspersons from the district who brought laurels during the recently concluded North East Olympic Games 2022 and the WAKO Indian OPEN International Kickboxing Tournament 2022.
The sportspersons who were felicitated during the programme include Willbornson Wahlang, Dajied Wanshnong, Andrica Nongsiej, Banpynskhem Lyngkhoi, Marshall Pariong, Lyntijingkyrmen Kharjahrin, Wolbetstar Ramsiej and Lumjingsuk Iawphniaw.
