SHILLONG, Nov 30: Anticipating quicker results, Independent MLA from Nongkrem Lambor Malngiang on Wednesday said the investigation into the firing incident at Mukroh, West Jaintia Hills, should be conducted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and not the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
“The investigation will not be completed even after three to four years if the CBI is tasked with the job. What I personally feel is that we should demand for NIA to ensure the investigation is completed at the earliest,” Malngiang told reporters.
The Nongkrem MLA questioned as to why the police or the State Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the state government is yet to summon the personnel of both Assam Police and Assam Forest Protection Guard, who were reportedly responsible for the unprovoked firing on November 22 last which led to the death of five innocent villagers of Mukroh.
He pointed out that there is a delay despite eight days since the incident and with a case already registered against them.
“We expect the police to arrest these people at the earliest,” Malngiang said.
Meanwhile, the Nongkrem independent MLA also demanded that the Cabinet decision to set up Police Border Outposts in the seven sensitive areas should be made operational within a period of one month.
“It should not be temporary outposts. It should be an outpost with all the necessary infrastructures and manpower,” he added.
He also suggested that people manning such outposts should be given full authority to retaliate if the situation demands.
The MLA has come down heavily on the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member, Tuliram Ronghang, for terming the Khasi population residing at Mukroh as illegal settlers.
Questioning the claim of Ronghang that Mukroh falls under the jurisdiction of the KAAC, he said that the the village is within the territory of Meghalaya and it is does not fall under the 12 areas of differences.
