SHILLONG, Dec 6: Voters are wise and they will not fall prey to the use of money power during the upcoming Assembly elections, said the vice president of the Voice of the People Party (VPP), Dr H Kara Chen.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Chen emphasised that party president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit had won three elections without using money power.
“This only proves we cannot buy the votes of the people with money. As a party, we are very much against such practices since we believe in clean politics and good governance,” the VPP vice president said, while stressing that the objective of democracy is defeated when money is used to influence people’s decisions.
“The elected MLA will not give importance to their people since he has managed to win the election by giving money to them. At the end, it is the people who are losing,” Chen said.
He, however, promised accountability the VPP is elected in the upcoming polls.
Referring to regional parties in Mizoram and Tamil Nadu, which are leading the governments there, Chen said regional parties can provide good governance in Meghalaya, if provided an opportunity.
The VPP vice president, meanwhile, revealed that the party will be fielding candidates in 15 constituencies as of now. “We are planning to field candidates in some more constituencies,” he added.
