MAWKYRWAT, Dec 9: PHE Minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar on Friday asserted that Meghalaya, in the last 50 years, has made significant strides and has grown in every sector such as road, communication, economy, healthcare and education.
Addressing a programme in Mawkyrwat as the chief guest, Tongkhar said, “We used to hear stories that our parents had to walk on foot from Mawngap to Mawkyrwat because there was no road, people died of cholera because of the lack of healthcare facilities and people from this area were once offered jobs in government offices after passing matriculation examinations — now there are graduates everywhere.”
He also argued that it is the people, especially youths, who can take Meghalaya forward. “It all depends on us all, as the youths, how to take our state forward and finish the incomplete work of our past leaders,” Tongkhar, who is also the local MLA, said.
It may be mentioned that the programme was organised by the Seng Samla Shnong Mawkyrwat in collaboration with the Office of the South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner to celebrate Meghalaya’s 50 years of statehood.
During the programme, the Seng Samla Shnong Mawkyrwat also felicitated Tongkhar, local MDC Carness Sohshang, Deputy Commissioner C Kharkongor, among others.
As part of the celebration, the Seng Samla Shnong Mawkyrwat also organised the District Talents & Musical Evening, Mr and Miss Mawkyrwat 2022 and Children’s Fashion Show.
