SHILLONG, Dec 9: Following a complaint by the Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM), police on Friday intercepted 42 overladen trucks carrying coal, sand, coke and other items.
Following the interception, an FIR was also registered against the trucks.
Meanwhile, the HNYM has decided to write to the registrar of the High Court of Meghalaya against the blatant violation of an order, issued by the government in June this year, that prohibits trucks from carrying items beyond the permissible limit while plying through the Umiam bridge.
“We will be writing to the Registrar of the High Court of Meghalaya next week,” HNYM president Louis Dohtdong said here on Friday.
Stating that the state government order prohibits plying of vehicles in excess of 20 tonnes over Umiam Bridge, he said, “But we were shocked to see trucks carrying over 30 tonnes while plying through the bridge.”
Questioning the absence of weighbridges to detect overladen trucks, Dohtdong also alleged that the members of HNYM were informed by the police that they had been directed by “high-profile people” to be lenient on such trucks.
