TURA, Dec 12: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday paid rich tribute to legendary Garo freedom fighter, Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma, on his 150th death anniversary, which was observed at Chisobibra near Williamnagar in East Garo Hills.
Conrad paid rich tribute to the freedom fighter in the presence of Government Chief Whip Marcus N Marak, Chairman of Meghalaya Transport Corporation and Rongjeng MLA Jim Sangma, and other dignitaries and the locals.
During his speech, the chief minister recalled the heroic sacrifices of the freedom fighter and his contributions to the freedom struggle against British Raj. He further said that it was the responsibility of each and everyone to keep alive the memory of the state’s freedom fighters and pass it on to the future generations.
Addressing the gathering, Conrad said that cross-cultural exchange programmes take place throughout the state to make people, especially the younger generation, aware of the different freedom fighters of Meghalaya.
Informing about the state government’s plans to develop the Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma memorial park at Chisobibra, the chief minister said that Rs 50 lakh has been sanctioned for the facelift, and work for the same would commence soon.
A commemorative postage stamp of Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma was also released by the chief minister and other dignitaries during the programme.
On the occasion, foundation stones for the construction of bridge over river Rongon on Rongbing Boldak to Chekwebibra road and for the upgrade and improvement of internal roads of Williamnagar town were laid by the chief minister.
