SHILLONG, Dec 19: The NPP on Monday announced its candidates from the urban constituencies in Shillong.
Ampareen Lyngdoh and Mohendro Rapsang, who joined the party on Monday, would contest the elections from East and West Shillong seats. The party also named Jasmine M Lyngdoh as its candidate from Nongthymmai, Ransom Sutnga from North Shillong, Teibor Pathaw from Mawlai and Rocky Hek from Pynthorumkhrah.
The announcement was made during the public function held at Madan Iewrynghep.
Speaking on the occasion, NPP national president and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma recalled the connection between his father (L) PA Sangma and Ampareen’s father (L) PG Marbaniang and said: “It is almost as if we were always meant to be together. It is almost as if we have been together in the past when the generation before us worked shoulder to shoulder to take Meghalaya forward and here we are together again to continue the work that these great leaders started and take it to its logical conclusion,” Sangma said.
Stating that the hope of securing absolute majority has brought them together, Sangma recalled that in the last five years the government faced numerous challenges but kept going on keeping the interest of the people in mind.
Sangma also sang paeans about his government’s achievements starting from roads to water supply and securing the lives of mothers.
“The GSDP of the state has crossed 8% in the last five years whereas from 2011 to 2016, the GSDP of the state was in the negative,” the CM said, adding that the government’s spending has doubled from Rs 9,000 crore to Rs 18,000 crore in the annual budget.
