SHILLONG, Jan 5: The Meghalaya Trinamool Congress on Thursday said the BJP was welcome to approach any court of law they want against the TMC’s financial inclusion scheme “WE Card”.
“We are well within our rights to work for women empowerment and this is a promise that we have made and therefore if the BJP feels this is violating some code of conduct or something which is not allowed, they are most welcome to approach any court of law they want, but I know that will hold no water,” Meghalaya TMC chief Charles Pyngrope said.
Criticising the BJP for promising people Rs 15 lakh in their account prior to the Lok Sabha elections in 2012 but failing to do so, Pyngrope said unlike the BJP, the TMC will stick to its commitment when it comes to power.
Reminded that the elections results in the state usually present a fractured mandate, he said that the TMC will honour its promise even if comes to power by stitching up a partnership with other parties.
“This is our commitment and we will continue with it. Which political party in a coalition would want to derail the people of such benefits?”
It may be recalled that the state BJP had decided to file a complaint with the Election Commission against the TMC promise to provide financial assistance to women in the state.
The scheme seeks to provide Rs 1,000 per month to each woman from a house as guaranteed income support.
So far, around two lakh women have registered under the scheme.
