SHILLONG, Jan 7: Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday confiscated human hair worth Rs 30 lakh, which was being smuggled into Bangladesh.
According to a statement, the seized consignment was being transported from Shillong to the bordering village of Jamador in South West Khasi Hills, and was to be further smuggled into Bangladesh from the riverine area.
However, the consignment was intercepted by the BSF personnel and subsequently seized.
“The seized human hair has been handed over to the Custom Balat, East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya,” the statement said.
It is pertinent to note that Bangladesh has recently emerged as a new transit hub for smuggling of human hair. The same is further shipped to China and Taiwan.
Earlier, Myanmar was used as a transit country.
Last year, 225 kg of human hair was seized by BSF from the Indo-Bangladesh border.
