SHILLONG, Jan 14: In what may appear to invigorate the movement for a separate Garo state, a former Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Purno K Sangm, has joined the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) as one of its leaders to pursue the demand for a separate state.
Meanwhile, Jakrak A Sangma was elected as the co-chairman of the committee.
GSMC additional general secretary Bostone M Sangma said that the committee has decided to once again protest in New Delhi to pursue their demand for a separate state.
The decision was taken at a meeting in Tura on Friday. Sangma said that they have also decided to hold campaigns in the Garo Hills region on the demand.
The GSMC, which has joined forces with the National Federation for New States (NFNS), had also recently joined various leaders representing regions demanding separate and smaller states in the country at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to push for a separate Garoland.
The Garo Hills region has been witnessing a gradual but growing demand for a separate Garo state. Last year, a massive rally was organised by the GSMC to press forward the demand.
The demand got ample support from the NFNS.
