Fire engulfs shops, houses in SWKH

MAWKYRWAT, Jan 19: Two houses were reduced to ashes while two others as well as shops suffered major damage after one of the houses caught fire at Rangblang Pombriew market, 20 km from Mawkyrwat, in South West Khasi Hills.
However, no injuries were reported.
According to the locals, the incident took place in the wee hours of Thursday.
An occupant of one of the houses said he heard the sound of the fire and dashed out of the premises leaving everything behind.
The cause of the incident is suspected to be short circuit.
One Tranling Khardewsaw, owner of a computer shop that was gutted, said that equipment worth Rs 4 lakh was destroyed by fire.
Another house-cum-shop of one Kheril Thyrniang was also destroyed with loss of property estimated at Rs 7.50 lakh.
The two houses that sustained damage in the incident belong to Dwilin Syiemiong and Phin Thongni, and the losses estimated are Rs 2.50 lakh and Rs 1.50 lakh respectively.
