Acting on a tip-off that two drug peddlers were transporting illegal contraband from Manipur to Shillong via Assam, the Ri-Bhoi Anti Narcotics Task Force swung into action and intercepted the suspects at Byrnihat. A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of 20 soap boxes containing heroin with an estimated international market value of Rs 1.2 crore.
The arrested persons were identified as Abigail Vanpari Vanchhawng of Nongrim Hills, Shillong, and Rintu Chanshyam Saikia (30) from Malad West, Mumbai. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered at Nongpoh police station.
