SHILLONG, Jan 19: The NPP on Thursday said the Trinamool Congress brought 50% of the crowd for party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremoMamata Banerjee’s rally from Assam.
The NPP also ridiculed Banerjee for being ignorant about the tribes of Meghalaya despite visiting the state several times.
“About 50% of the crowd that participated at the rally was from Assam. She was totally at sea about the tribes of Meghalaya and the local conditions,” NPP spokesperson and Williamnagar MLA, Marcuise N Marak said.
He said it was preposterous for the NPP to think it can get a majority in the state when its leaders are not able to connect with the locals.
Asserting that Banerjee’s rally in Garo Hills will have no impact, he said: “I believe that NPP will win an absolute majority in the state this time as we have been able to deliver on the promises made. With schemes such as Focus and Focus+, we have been able to uplift the people and with programmes such as Aspire, we have succeeded in building the capacity of the youth in the state.”
Taking a jibe at the leader of the opposition, Mukul Sangma, Marak said, “He is in the danger zone now. He is risking his career by contesting from two constituencies. He goes to Tikrikilla and says that if he wins, he will give up the Songsak seat and vice versa.”
NPP state president, WR Kharlukhi echoed similar sentiments, underlining the perils of taking voters for a ride. “We are prepared for anybody, not just Banerjee,” he said. “We are organised, have worked hard and are working for the people. We have shown our report card and it is now for the people to decide,” he said.
Pointing out that it has been the endeavour of the state government to resolve the vexed interstate boundary issue, he said the TMC has been opposing it.
