SHILLONG, Jan 21: Foiling a major smuggling bid, the BSF seized clothing items (sarees) worth more than Rs 24 lakh from the border area of East Khasi Hills on Friday.
The clothing items were meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh.
The consignment was seized by troopers of 4th Battalion of the BSF from the area of Pyrdwah village after intercepting two vehicles loaded with the items.
The BSF party signalled the two vehicles to stop but the drivers sped towards Pyrdwah village which lies very close to the international boundary. On being chased, the drivers eventually abandoned the vehicles and fled.
The seized items were handed over to Customs department at Pynursla and an FIR is also lodged with Pynursla PS for further investigation and legal action.
It is pertinent to note here that the Indian clothing and cosmetics items are in high demand in Bangladesh, which leads to illegal flow of such items into Bangladesh.
