Guwahati, Jan 24 : Two persons were killed in a mishap in the wee hours of Tuesday after a Goalpara-bound Tata Dumper (AS-01 NC 9882) collided head on with a truck (AS01 JC 3904) coming from the opposite direction.
The drivers of both the vehicles succumbed to burn injuries after they were stranded in their seats as the  vehicles caught fire around 3.30 am.
Notably, National Highway 17, is becoming a death trap as fatal road accidents occur on this highway under the Boko Police Station area in lower Assam’s Kamrup (rural) district.
A witness said a Guwahati-bound sand-laden Tata Dumper (AS25 EC 1877) was parked for sometime, and in the meantime the Goalpara bound Tata Dumper and the other truck collided face to face.
The witness suspected that the incident happened only because the Guwahati-bound truck was trying to overtake the parked Tata Dumper.
He further said he immediately called the police and Boko police responded quickly.
The state disaster response force (SDRF) Boko, he alleged,  responded a tad late to the accident.
Police sources said the deceased truck driver was identified as Bhadreswar Patgiri from Dudhnoi in Goalpara district, while the Tata Dumper driver was identified as Krishna Das from Bamunigaon in Kamrup district.
