SHILLONG, Jan 23: Dejected at not being allotted a party ticket by the UDP, Serazul Kharkongor recently resigned from the party and has now decided to contest as an Independent candidate.
Kharkongor, who had submitted his resignation letter to UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh on January 19, had applied for a party ticket to contest from Mahendraganj constituency against former chief minister Mukul Sangma’s wife, Dikkanchi D Shira.
Discontented by the attitude of the UDP leadership, he alleged that the party overlooked his candidature despite UDP South West Garo Hills recommending his name to the State Election Committee.
“I was told that the party leadership has rejected my name,” Kharkongor said, adding that he will contest the upcoming polls as an Independent candidate.
