WILLIAMNAGAR, Jan 29: The ruling NPP is confident of retaining power in Meghalaya, asserting that the TMC and the BJP would not pose any challenge as the two parties would struggle to win seats, particularly in the Garo Hills region.
A decisive victory in the 24 seats spread across the five districts of Garo Hills is likely to seal the fate either in favour of the NPP or the TMC.
Two-time MLA from Williamnagar and NPP spokesperson, Marcuise Marak, asserted that both TMC and BJP would struggle to win seats in the upcoming Assembly elections from Garo Hills and the NPP was not considering them as threats.
Marcuise who is pitted against Deborah C Marak of the Congress and Alphonsush Marak of the TMC, among others, believes that only Deborah would pose a challenge.
“My main fight will be with the Congress candidate and I am sure that I will win by a big margin because of the support my campaign has received from the people of Williamnagar,” a confident Marcuise said.
“The TMC and the BJP are not threats to us. You should have seen just a few days ago when TMC leader Mukul Sangma came for a campaign meeting in Williamnagar, there was hardly anyone present. This just shows the influence that the TMC and its leaders will have on people in the upcoming elections. We are going to get the maximum number of seats from Garo Hills,” felt Marcuise. He referred to the development work initiated by the NPP-led government and said people were aware of how much work has been done to better lives in his constituency.
“I am working on my report card for the work we have done for Williamnagar which we will present to the people of the constituency,” he added.
Marcuise said one of his biggest achievements, was the fulfilment of the long-pending demand for land settlement of the Kusimikolgre and Warima areas which benefitted over 1,300 families.
“This has been long pending and no one had taken this matter up earnestly. We decided it was the best time to finish. The tag of encroachers on government land (me included) will now be removed,” the NPP leader stated.
