SHILLONG, Feb 6: The NPP has slammed BJP president Ernest Mawrie, who is in the fray from West Shillong, while accusing him of distributing ‘cheap and deteriorated’ blankets in the constituency to buy votes.
In a statement, NPP’s West Shillong block general secretary, Mike Pakyntein, said the statement of Mawrie is just a desperate attempt to malign the image of NPP candidate Mohendro Rapsang as he has no concrete point at issue to bring to the table.
Terming the BJP president as an empty vessel who speaks without any understanding or knowledge, he said, “He (Mawrie) is an outsider who stays at Demthring. What knowledge, empathy, understanding would he have for our people and how would he even connect with the people of West Shillong constituency,” he said.
The NPP leader exuded confidence in Rapsang to win against the likes of UDP’s Paul Lyngdoh and BJP’s Ernest Mawrie in the February 27 polls.
Taking a dig at both Mawrie and Lyngdoh over distribution of freebies, Pakyntein alleged the blankets given away by Mawrie were of cheap rated while the kettles as well as blankets from the UDP leader were of the lowest quality.
He said that the BJP president has been accused by his own party functionaries of demanding cash for party ticket, which is “daylight robbery”.
Taking yet another swipe at the State BJP chief, he pointed out that renting a house in the constituency a few months before the elections will not make him a local of the area.
