Guwahati, Feb 8: Assam Police have arrested three persons accused to have murdered two minor siblings in a village in lower Assam’s Bongaigaon district earlier this month.

The complainant, Abdul Bashir Ahmed, who is also the uncle of the deceased minors, had lodged an FIR stating that “some unknown miscreants had brutally murdered his 16-year-old niece and 14-year-old nephew on the intervening night of February 1 and 2, 2023”.

The deceased are the children of Abdul Baten Saikh of Durgamari village.

“Based on the FIR lodged at the police station, a special investigation team of Bongaigaon Police, led by additional superintendent of police (headquarters) Luna Sonowal, launched an investigation and arrested the prime accused, Abu Sufian Ahmed, who also happens to be elder cousin brother of the deceased, after he confessed to have killed the minor victims by slitting their throats,” official sources informed.

According to his confessional statement, the scene of crime was recreated and the murder weapon (knife) was recovered as led by the accused.

“The motive of the crime was a long-standing land dispute and death threat posed to the minor son of the accused by the male deceased. The accused killed the male victim first and when the female victim came to know about the incident, the accused murdered her in the same manner,” sources said.

Subsequently, two other accused, identified as Majnu Saikh and Mosheeda Khatun, were arrested. The case is currently under investigation.

The police investigation team also comprised the officer in-charge of Bongaigaon police station, inspector Upen Kalita, and sub-inspector Birsing Bordoloi, in-charge of Bidyapur police outpost.
