Saleng in trouble over attempt to flee police checkpoint

SHILLONG, Feb 9: Police have registered a case against Congress candidate from Gambegre, Saleng A Sangma for trying to evade and flee from a police checkpoint near 9th Mile on the outskirts of Tura.
A summon notice will also be sent to him, police said.
According to police, a convoy was signalled to stop on Wednesday night but instead of stopping, the convoy sped away after almost hitting officials of the surveillance team and police personnel on duty.
Soon a chase ensued and the convoy of Saleng Sangma was intercepted after which a through checking of the vehicles and a body search was done but nothing objectionable was found.
The police detained all of them including the escort pilot vehicle which was later sent back to Shillong as Saleng is not entitled to have one at this juncture.
The district magistrate lodged an FIR against the Congress candidate and a case has been registered.
Police said a summon notice will be issued to record the statements of Saleng and his convoy team. Since the offences are punishable by less than seven years, no arrest has been made, police said, adding that the matter has been reported to the Election Commission of India.
