SHILLONG, Feb 10: In a bid to educate voters, the HYC on Friday distributed pamphlets among the general public in Motphran area as part of its political awareness campaign titled ‘Rai Eh Daw Campaign’ under the theme ‘Elect with Responsibility’.
It may be mentioned that the HYC members are travelling to various parts of the state to educate and sensitise people on electing quality leaders.
Speaking to media persons, HYC general secretary Roykupar Synrem said it is important to elect leaders who are committed to form a corruption-free and responsible government, which is solely focused on the best interest of the people of the state.
Arguing that Meghalaya needs statesmen and not businessmen, Synrem said, “We need to elect people who can formulate policies and laws which will give special protection to the indigenous population of the state.”
He expressed surprise at seeing the increase in the assets of the legislators in the past five years.
“These MLAs cannot accumulate so much wealth by way of their salaries. Most of them have become richer by the misutilisation of public money,” the HYC general secretary said.
Earlier, HYC president Robert Kharjahrin had cautioned electorates against falling prey to lies or accepting money from candidates and political parties on the voting day. “Election is not a festival of freebies where people get free booze or free food,” he said.
“We will not campaign against or for the present government but we will remind and educate our people on the failure of various state governments to fulfil the demands of the public, especially on issues pertaining to the welfare of our indigenous community,” he added.
