EGH DEO seeks co-op for peaceful conduct of polls

WILLIAMNAGAR/TURA, Feb 11: East Garo Hills District Election Officer (DEO), Jagdish Chelani, on Saturday sought cooperation from political parties and the candidates to ensure a peaceful and democratic conduct of Assembly elections.
The appeal was made during a meeting in Williamnagar, which was attended by General Observer MK Abdul Haque, Expenditure Observer T Ramalingam, Returning Officers, political parties, candidates, et al.
During the meeting, the DEO also accentuated the need to adhere to the guidelines of the Election Commission of India and the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and highlighted the dos and don’ts of the use of vehicles and the helicopters by the candidates and the star campaigners while electioneering.
It was also informed by the DEO that the use of postal ballots for the Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) will start from February 17.
Others who spoke during the meeting include the General Observer and the Expenditure Observer.
Briefing in Tura
Meanwhile, in Tura, the political parties, Candidates as well as election agents were on Saturday briefed by the Central Expenditure Observer on various expenditures and their maintenance as per ECI mandate.
A two-hour interactive session was also held during which representatives and agents of all contesting political parties highlighted their doubts, the clarifications for which were made by the West Garo Hills Expenditure Observers.
Special thrust was also given to follow the guidelines of the ECI to maintain regular accounts of expenses incurred.
“Expenditure Observers also encouraged the use of Voters Helpline number 1950 and cVigil app for any immediate reports and concern in their respective constituencies,” a statement in this regard said.
