SHILLONG, Feb 11: The NPP on Saturday said the promise of the Congress party to make Meghalaya a ‘five-star’ state is a pipe dream which will be crushed in a few days to come.
“They won’t be able to form the government. All these promises are for the elections as after the results, they will be sitting in the opposition again,” NPP spokesperson Bajop Pyngrope said.
“They don’t have winnable candidates. They have candidates just for the sake of having them,” he said.
Kick-starting its poll campaign with the promise of making Meghalaya a five-star state, Congress on Thursday announced its ‘five commitments’ to achieve this goal.
The commitments included a job for a deserving member in each family, uninterrupted electricity, efforts to stop workers’ migration from the hill state and Rs 3,000 as a direct benefit transfer for single mothers from BPL families.
“We are very happy Congress is raising hope of a five-star Meghalaya even though they could not do it when they were in power,” Pyngrope said.
He asked if Congress is aiming to achieve this, why does nobody across the country believe it?
The NPP said it has been retaliating against the attacks by its coalition partners in the run-up to the elections. “We have been the single-largest and have run the government with our allies. We will not speak against them just to derive political mileage,” he said.
The people are not fools to not sift the election drama from reality, he added.
“We wish our coalition partners luck,” Pyngrope said.
He pointed out that only the state unit of the BJP has been attacking them.
