NEW DELHI, Feb 12: With assembly election process already on and formation of a new government likely early next month in Meghalaya, the Centre on Sunday shifted Bihar Governor, Phagu Chauhan, a career politician to the hill state.
Meghalaya has a history of throwing hung assemblies with no party crossing the halfway mark. In such an uncertain situation where many parties form a coalition government, the Governor plays an important role.
The 75-year-old Chauhan had won the Ghosi assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh for a record six times, representing various parties like Lok Dal, Bahujan Samaj Party, and BJP.
Chauhan replaces Brig. (retd) BD Mishra, Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, who was holding additional charge of Meghalaya. He has now been appointed as Lt. Governor of Ladakh.
The post of full-time Governor of Meghalaya was lying vacant since Satya Pal Malik’s term expired last year.
