SHILLONG, Feb 13: Asserting that it had a very pragmatic view with regard to all festivals and celebrations, the Meghalaya BJP on Monday vehemently denied circulating any letter to the effect that the party was against celebration of Valentine’s Day. The party will file an FIR in this regard.
Asserting that the letter, which is being widely shared on social media, was highly despicable and fraud, the BJP said, “The letter is clearly a political weapon designed to create mistrust towards the BJP in the face of the upcoming assembly elections.”
“We fear it is the work of some desperately scared political opponent,” the party added.
Meghalaya BJP president Ernest Mawrie said, “The BJP welcomes celebrations as they lift the happiness quotient of the society. The letter is clearly a cheap political stunt that a desperate opposition has tried to pull on the BJP just ahead of the assembly elections. The letter goes on to show that political opponents of the BJP are scared of the rising popularity of the party in Meghalaya, and in despair are trying to give a communal colour to the elections.”
The letter is a conspiracy to defame the BJP and to create mistrust against the party, Mawrie said. “These malicious tactics will not fool the people. The BJP has initiated the filing of a FIR against all those responsible for the circulation of the fake letter. A case for forgery will also be filed against the culprit,” Mawrie said in a statement.
