Sawkmie’s remarks reflect UDP, NPP’s differences

SHILLONG, Feb 27: UDP’s candidate from Mawlai and a seasoned politician, PT Sawkmie has asserted that the regional party would correct the ‘wrongs’ of the NPP-led MDA Government, in an apparent indication that the party is not keen on going with the previous coalition combination comprising the NPP, UDP, BJP and others.
“The then government has failed in many aspects. We do not want repetition. Our party again will have to correct the wrongs of the previous government,” he said after casting his vote on Monday.
Responding to a query on whether he is hopeful of a particular position in the new government, if UDP becomes a part of it, Sawkmie said, “I would like my party to be in the government, and for me, it all depends on the leaders of the party whether I will be accommodated or not in the cabinet.” He, however, emphasised that what is important is to win the polls in Mawlai constituency adn do more for the people. Sawkmie was confident of returning for another term as MLA of Mawlai. “I will come back as an MLA of Mawlai constituency. Since the first day of preparation, I have been very happy that everything went well”.
“In the last five years, I have tried my best in a limited capacity even in the Assembly. I tried to bring many schemes and have also been raising a lot of issues of the people (in Assembly). I am very confident to be re-elected and I have no doubt about the love and support of the people,” he added.
He reiterated that this time around, the UDP will lead the government.
