Guwahati, Mar 1: An adult elephant, which was trapped for about a month in the Rajapara area under Bondapara Forest Range of West Kamrup forest division, succumbed to its injuries, sources said.

The carcass of the female elephant which had sustained multiple injuries on parts of its body, including its right leg, was noticed by some residents in a field near the Kukurmara Reserve Forest under the Bondapara Forest Range on Tuesday evening.

Subsequently, hundreds of residents from the surrounding villages, including Rajapara, Dekapara, Kukurmara, Sukuniapara, Sonalipara, Kalitapara and Khorapara gathered at the site and paid their last respects.

A section of irate residents blamed the apathy of the state forest department and veterinary department for the death of the elephant, alleging that despite being intimated, the authorities did precious little to save the elephant.
