SHILLONG, March 1: In a significant achievement for matrilineal Meghalaya, Delina Khongdup from Lyndem village of Pynursla in East Khasi Hills District has been nominated as a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW) by the Government of India for a three-year term.
Two more women — Mamata Kumari and Khusboo Sundar — have also been nominated as members of the NCW as per the same notification.
Khongdup told The Shillong Times that she was ecstatic after learning that she has been appointed as a member of the NCW.
“Initially, I could not believe the news. But finally I convinced myself by concluding that this was meant for me,” she said.
Khongdup, a lawyer by profession, is a former secretary of Meghalaya BJP. She had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Shillong in 2015.
She is also associated with the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority and also with the Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute (MATI).
Khongdup had given several lectures in various conclaves and seminars relating to women empowerment.
The lawyer runs her own playschool which she started recently. She is also a member of the Asorphi Education Society, Pynursla.
She rose to prominence after filing a public interest litigation seeking minority status for the Niam Khasi Niam Tre and Songsarek with the objective that they too should receive benefits of the programmes initiated by the Centre for the Scheduled Tribes and other minority communities.
