SHILLONG, March 3: Meghalaya DGP Dr LR Bishnoi has accentuated the need to make full use of the tourism potential of the Whistling Village — Kongthong.
Addressing the inaugural session of the two-day national seminar at Women’s College, Shillong, on Friday, the DGP said that Meghalaya is blessed with abundant natural resources, high literacy rate, especially among women, as well as great tourism potential.
Contending that the development planning here should be made keeping in mind the social norms of the state, he said Meghalaya can teach the world about ecological development as well as sustainable growth.
With regard to the theme of the seminar ‘Meghalaya in the 21st Century’, the DGP said that global developments impact one and all.
He also informed that a session of the G20 Summit would also be held on April 16-17 in Meghalaya.
“This goes to show that Meghalaya’s future also is linked to world developments,” the GDP said.
He also appealed to the students to stay away from drugs and alcohol.
The Shillong Times Editor Patricia Mukhim, on the other hand, chaired the first technical session, during which several papers on the economic growth and development of Meghalaya were presented.
Others who were part of the programme include Prof. Shobhan N Lamare, Department of History NEHU Shillong, MLCU Chancellor Dr Glen Kharkongor, college principal Dr Ratnadeep Roy, among others.
It may be mentioned that the two-day national seminar will be attended by academicians, scholars, faculty members and students of the college.
